Book Review: Combative by Jay McLean

4 Stars ★★★★☆

Title: Combative
Genre: New Adult Romance
Author: Jay McLean
Release Date: 5/16/15

Before I begin I must warn you. This book ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, but it doesn’t disappoint. Ok?… Now we continue!

One thing I really enjoy from Jay McLean’s writing is how she manages to touch on deep topics. She has the ability to give you these tense moments without affecting the breezy easygoing moments that most romance books are famous for.

In this case we have the two parts that form this unlikely couple, Madison and Ky. They meet in front of the mailboxes of the apartment complex they both live in. Madison just moved in across the hall from Ky. She is a complete mystery, to say the least. She is sweet and just has this way of living, existing. It made me realize how honored I am to exist and be able to stop and smell the flowers along the way.

Ky is this brooding guy who has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He lives with a lot of pent up guilt thinking he is not worthy of anything good. He is veteran soldier, home after 4 deployments. He has an anger issues that lead him to beat up a guy to near death. Thanks to Ky’s brother he doesn’t end up in jail for attempted murder. In exchange he must go undercover as a fighter to investigate Nate DeLuca, who runs a fighting organization and is suspected of being a cover for a drug ring.

As I mentioned the book ends on a cliffhanger but, perfect timing and all, book 2 releases on March 8, 2016! The sequel is called Redemptive and I can’t wait to get my hands on it, I’m dying to know what’s next. Book 1 left me with sooooo many unanswered questions!
